Day 181 - 2010

Worldcup2010-Logo

No Game today

I watched the first game, Brazil going back home. The Netherlands look really fresh and well conditioned. Brazil, as well as the other South American soccer teams, need to get away from the short passing situations. I missed the second game and read about it in the newspaper, apparently Ghana gave it away.

Today Starbucks and programming – it is absolutely gorgeous outside.

Lansdowne concert was pretty good.

IMG_2720The guy on the left played multiple instruments, two at the time. They sounded really good.

nothing today – too nice outside

Day 180 - 2010

Worldcup2010-Logo

Paraguay: Japan0:0 5:3 PSO
Unlucky nerves for Japan in the shootout, watch for the trainer to resign
Spain: Portugal 1:0
As expected Spain pulled ahead

Programmed all day and watched soccer. Japan looked really good but at the end was not able to convert on the penalty shootout. I expect the trainer to resign tomorrow.

Abby’s double header is tonight, all the way in Falls Church in rush hour traffic. So we get there, first ones there, and after the rest of the team gets there the game is rescheduled to Southlake High School – in Reston. Luckily the beltway was free and we were able to use the HOV lane – made it. Of course the first game was a disaster, but they recovered nicely in the second game and won.

Abby’s tree lost a branch in Sundays storm. It was already split and the wind did the rest.

I went to see Chloe at softball camp which is ongoing for the week.

and Max got his pellet gun.

BTW

nothing today

Netherlands : Slovakian 2:1
Watch for the Netherlands
Brazil : Chile 3:0
As expected

Monday --- who knows what the day will bring. Need to get my tires and brakes fixed.

What an ordeal – 8 hours without a car stuck at Starbucks with a computer. $985 later my car has new brakes, tires and an oil change (there was no oil in there to start with).

I found this in the June 25th edition of the Washington Post

bank deposits

So here I’m Saturday morning with a check to deposit into my account – done deal. When do I get it? TUESDAY !!  Still don’t get it, Saturday is naturally a Monday business day transaction with a cutoff for deposits at 3PM. Why is it not in there after 3PM, if I make a deposit before 3PM on Monday morning it is available after 3PM …..  ????

Day 178 - 2010

Worldcup2010-Logo

Germany : England 4:1
What a game, even with the apparent missed goal, Germany out played England
Argentina : Mexico 3:1
Mexico self destructing

Just Soccer – Germany against England, wonderful soccer masterful played by Germany, hardly any fouls. The second one is Argentina against Mexico – a no brainer, Argentina is clearly the favorite. As I watch them play I must say that Mexico is not disappointing the expectations – they suck.

Tonight is the AGSL Board of Directors meeting as is the Summer Music Fest.

BTW

referees in soccer

The pressure is on for the soccer games – instant replay. Several calls were totally miserable, the latest was the goal by England against Germany, the ball was clearly in the goal, yet it was not given. Perhaps this is the 44 year old revenge played out when England went ahead by a goal which was clearly NOT in the goal. I watched it when I was 10, now at 54 I enjoyed watching the rematch as a new breed of players took the field.

The same is true for the game Argentina against Mexico, clearly off site the goal is given anyway. Although I must say that Mexico is just defeating themselves. The first two goals were defending mistakes, the third goal was the only well played out.

Amazing as well is the acting talents most players posses if they can get a free kick out of it. Most of them lay on the ground until they get a free kick, then they are fine and alive.  The referees have to make calls on a blink of an eye – very difficult. Although in this world cup they are using communication devices to talk among the line judges and the referee. The major opposition is the fact that the play would be interrupted and lose the pace. I guess the refs are just human too….

Worldcup2010-Logo

Uruguay : Korea 2:1
No brainer as Uruguay beats Korea
USA : Ghana 1:2
Well fought but at the end they lost

Could not get my act together, my whole body hurt. Why, I don’t know. Cleaned up in the morning, then went to watch the soccer game at the Steakhouse in Ashburn. Fiddled with a new concept until 10PM then went to take care of Moxie.

BTW

Nothing really today

Portugal : Brazil 0:0
Fiddle Game, it did not mean anything since both teams are advancing
Korea : Ivory Coast 0:3
End run for Korea
Chile : Spain 1:2
Chile out performed by Spain
Switzerland : Honduras 0:0
Nothing really both are out anyway

Max’s Birthday (11) today.

Happy Birthday Max

I can’t believe that Max turned 11 today. I’m very proud of him, a very intelligent kid. We started off hitting some balls on the driving range and at 2:30 PM we went to play 9 holes. That is what he wanted for his birthday.

1757 Golf Club is a relatively new golf course which was intended to be a private club. Later it was opened to the public. It does look and feel like a private club inside.

home_photo03

It was a lot of fun, Max has a very natural swing and drives the ball straight.

Afterward we went swimming followed by dinner from Applebee's. It was a great day, I hope Max had a great day too.

it was too nice today to find something to btw about

Slovakia : Italy 3:2
Goodbye Italy, get a younger team
Paraguay : New Zealand 0:0
well, so so
Denmark : Japan 1:3
What about Japan? Great players
Cameroon : Netherlands 1:2
Netherlands are undefeated, well played

GAMEDAY tonight for the Pride team. Worked most of the day on the program again. Then picked up Abby to get her to the game. The first game was great and they won. The second game was out of their league – they lost 0:12. Not their best effort.

Picture here

BTW

military

To intricate to get into the details, but I guess too much was said by too many people.

Gen. Stanley McChrystal, who along with his staff had been critical of the civilian leadership including Ambassador Karl W. Eikenberry and Richard C. Holbrooke, the State Department's envoy to the region.

Gen. McChrystal was a supporter of Mr. Obama's troop-surge in Afghanistan and appeared to have a working relationship with Afghan President Hamid Karzai, while the two diplomats have a strained relationship with Mr. Karzai.

Day 174 - 2010

Worldcup2010-Logo

Slovenia : England 0:1
Very close game
USA : Algeria 1:0
Way to go!!
Ghana : Germany 0:1
Hard win, Ghana is a very good team
Australia : Serbia 2:1
Australia played really well

It is be to a very hot day today – up to 96 degrees. Anyway, programming is on the agenda, need to finish the interface.

BTW

disturbing logistics

Here is an article I ran across yesterday in the Washington Post regarding the protection of supply convoys in Afghanistan. I know we are not there and don’t know what it is like, however, is this not why we have a military to protect the convoy? They cannot protect themselves?  One sentence really stood out: “ …According to the congressional report, the U.S. officers charged with supervising the deliveries never travel off bases to determine how the system works or to ensure that U.S. laws and regulations are followed….”, what the xxx are they there for? What purpose do the bases have then? What are the billions for, what security?

U.S. indirectly paying Afghan warlords as part of security contract

By Karen DeYoung

Washington Post Staff Writer
Tuesday, June 22, 2010; 5:17 PM

The U.S. military is funding a massive protection racket in Afghanistan, indirectly paying tens of millions of dollars to warlords, corrupt public officials and the Taliban to ensure safe passage of its supply convoys throughout the country, according to congressional investigators.

The security arrangements, part of a $2.16 billion transport contract, violate laws on the use of private contractors, as well as Defense Department regulations, and "dramatically undermine" larger U.S. objectives of curtailing corruption and strengthening effective governance in Afghanistan, a report released late Monday said.

Day 173 - 2010

Worldcup2010-Logo

Mexico Uruguay 0:1
Did not matter if the Mexican coach decided to play offense or defense

France : South Africa 1:2
should be interesting given the fact that they did not practice, and as promised they failed miserably. This will go into the soccer history as one of the greatest bloopers. See below.

Nigeria : Korea 2:2

Greece : Argentina 0:2
which was to be expected

After a week long absence from the gym I went back today to work out. It was just to busy with the last week of school and all.

Burke Lake today – row boating, mini golf and stuff…

Hotter than it should have been. We ended up with an electric boat. Nothing on the website said that there was a limit of three per boat, rats. Mini Golf was sort of fun.

2010-06-22

2010-06-221

So maybe they want to please me if we go and do something. We went to have lunch late and went to the pool afterwards. Chloe tried out the board jumping, so did Max.

Word of the day is IMBECILITY

BTW

still on it

Radio station host Jack Diamond is still on the subject about having pictures of your ex – husband or boyfriend in the house. Apparently his second wife does have some of her ex displayed. It is undetermined if he is dead or alive. In any event the discussion is still going about it. According to the facebook entries the majority of listeners is against it. One expressed that if he is dead it might be acceptable. I think it is up to the individual to do so, be sensitive about it – there is a new life there and all there is left of the past are pictures and memories – keep them separate.

Day 172 - 2010

Worldcup2010-Logo Portugal : Korea  7:0
WOW
unbelievable, Portugal made the defense look like they stood still

Chile : Switzerland 1:0
Did not watch this one

Spain : Honduras 2:0
Pretty good game, Spain stayed with it.

What a weekend. Games on Saturday and Sunday, Father’s Day celebrations – busy all around.

Spend the night with the kids. Cleanup in the morning. Outing to Starbucks with the dogs.

The pool in the afternoon with Chloe. She was determined to get her swimmers permit so she can jump off the diving board.

Abby to DST for a workout and then to Pitcher practice.

BTW

France??

What the @#$%^&* are they thinking? The French team went on strike for the training session after one of the players got expelled from the team. So typical. Don’t they see past their ego? This is not about the player, it is about the team, the country they represent. What egotistical attitudes. It is one thing to criticize the coach, but at the end it is the players who are on the field – make it happen.

Team France endures meltdown at World Cup

BY MICHELLE KAUFMAN

JOHANNESBURG, South Africa -- The French team is in flames -- and in dire need of a therapist. Things have gotten so bad that the team refused to practice Sunday.

The mess began when Nicolas Anelka cursed at coach Raymond Domenech during halftime of Thursday's 2-0 loss to Mexico. The coach has been criticized by players and the media after the team failed to score in its first two matches. Anelka refused to apologize for his outburst, so he was sent home.

The team protested by boycotting Sunday's practice. Players showed up at the field near Cape Town, said hello to 200 fans, then turned around, got back on the bus and drew the curtains. Team captain Patrice Evra quarreled with fitness coach Robert Duverne, who threw down his stopwatch in anger. Team director Jean-Louis Valentin, telling reporters he was “disgusted” by the team's behavior, resigned on the spot.

“I am ashamed. I am leaving immediately for Paris,”' he said.  “What has happened is a scandal for the federation, for the French team and for the whole country. They do not want to train. It is unacceptable.”

The players put out a statement that read: “All the players in the French squad without exception wish to affirm their opposition to the decision taken by the French Football Federation (FFF) to exclude Nicolas Anelka. We regret the incident at half-time of the France v. Mexico match, but we regret even more the divulging of an event which was only the squad's business and was part and parcel of the life of a top-level team. The FFF did not at any point try to protect the squad.”

Perhaps FIFA should send the French home and let the Irish come play the last Group A game, against South Africa. Ireland was eliminated by France in World Cup qualifying on an admitted hand ball by French star Thierry Henry.

Surely, Irish fans are laughing at the French soap opera.

  Happy Father’s Day

photo (3)

My dad, who always dressed impeccable.

Father's Day was only officially made a national holiday in the U.S. in 1972, when President Richard Nixon declared it to be the third Sunday of June. But the holiday actually traces its origins to early 20th-century Washington State.

Inspired by a Mother's Day sermon she heard at church in 1909, Spokane resident Sonora Smart-Dodd—one of six children being raised by a single dad—also wanted to honor her father. She encouraged local churches to institute the first Father's Day observance the following year, and the idea caught on.

Day 170 - 2010

Worldcup2010-Logo

Netherlands : Japan 1:0

Ghana : Australia 1:1

Cameron : Denmark 1:2

I only watched a little bit of the first game, the Netherlands looked really good. Japan fought until the end.

GAMEDAY

The summer season is in full swing now. The Pride’s first tournament game started at 8:45 AM this morning at Wakefield Park. It promised to be a very hot day full of great plays. Well it was a hot day, there were only a few great plays. The first inning of the first game was the worst. The girls looked like they just started playing softball. Luckily they shook it off the following innings. There were several players with a great effort towards the game. Mac was the most flashiest player. All in all it was a pretty good game. The team needs to learn that the play is not over after one play in the field, there are other things going on.

Emilie's graduation celebration went on tonight as well. I can’t believe that she graduated from High School. She will be attending JMU. It was with mixed feelings to see all the neighbors in one place.

I watched the long awaited release of “The Book of Eli”. A somewhat mixture of Mad Max and survival of mankind thing. Some timed events did not make sense nor did the beginning, but the overall message was buried in the end. As usual there is one guy again who tries to seek power or influence over others. Overall it was a disappointment in terms of the flow of events, but I guess they had to put something in it so it does not show a guy wandering towards the west for the entire movie.

In a violent post-apocalyptic society, the drifter Eli has been wandering to west across North America for the last thirty years reading a unique book that he brings with him. He survives hunting small animals and seeking goods in destroyed houses and vehicles to trade in villages for water and supplies. When he reaches the village ruled by the powerful mobster Carnegie, the man offers a job to Eli to join his gang. Carnegie presses his blind lover Claudia to send her daughter Solara to convince Eli spending the night with him. The girl sees the book of Eli, and when Carnegie beats up on Claudia, she reveals that Eli has the sought book. Carnegie sends his gang to take the book from Eli, but the man is up for protecting the book with his life.

Day 169 - 2010

Worldcup2010-Logo

Germany : Serbia 0:1
This should be a good game- it was NOT. A yellow card trigger happy referee for both sides. Klose out on a questionable foul, AND a missed free kick (HOW can you miss a free kick at this level????) The first one missed since 1974
Slovenia : USA 2:2
Another good one, it was. Well played by the US team.
England : Algeria 0:0
They better come out ahead, they did not. But the game was worth while watching.
